Bon Secours Health System and St. Mary’s Hospital Complete Transaction

Marriottsville, Maryland — Bon Secours Health System, Inc., (BSHSI) of Marriottsville, Md., and St. Mary’s Hospital, Inc., of Norton, have completed the transaction to transfer sponsorship of St. Mary’s to the Sisters of Bon Secours.

The transaction follows a 90-day management period during which due diligence work for the transition was completed. Effective July 1, the Norton hospital officially became Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital, Inc.

St. Mary’s, a Catholic health care facility, has been under the sponsorship of the Sisters of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God (SMG) since 1948. Bon Secours Health System, Inc., is a $2.1 billion dollar not-for-profit Catholic health system based in Marriottsville, Md.

The two systems and their respective sponsors share common visions and philosophies to preserve the Church’s healing ministry, improve the health status of the communities they serve, increase the health and social well being of the poor and marginalized, enhance operations excellence and seek opportunities for collaboration with others who share a common vision. Sister Patricia A. Eck, Chairperson of the Bon Secours Health System Board of Directors stated, “it is very clear that this relationship makes sense from a mission and business perspective. We are very excited about a presence in the Norton and look forward with working with a team that shares our commitment to a healing ministry.”

Sister Mary Coughlan, president of St. Mary's board of trustees, said, “I look forward to preserving the heritage and mission of our hospital through the strength and stability that Bon Secours offers. BSHSI has a strong values system and there are many similarities between us. We share a common vision and philosophy and traditions of quality care. Together, we anticipate effectively serving the needs of the people of this area and surrounding communities.”

Christopher M. Carney, CEO of Bon Secours Health System added, “ Bon Secours will be enriched by the talent and resources that St. Mary’s can bring to our System. We look forward to our new relationship and expanding our Virginia presence into this new community.”

St. Mary’s is a 133-bed acute care hospital offering inpatient and outpatient services. It includes a nursing care facility, freestanding behavioral health center, three medical arts centers, family medical centers for primary care, a home health service and home medical equipment and supplies.

In the United States, Bon Secours Health System owns, manages or joint ventures 24 acute-care hospitals, one psychiatric hospital, and nine nursing care facilities, along with numerous ambulatory sites, eight assisted living facilities, two retirement communities, home health care services and hospices. BSHSI’s more than 28,000 caregivers help people in 15 communities in nine states, primarily on the East Coast. The Congregation of Sisters of Bon Secours also has health care ministries in France, Ireland, Great Britain and South America.

BSHSI is focused on a vision of “becoming a leader in Catholic health ministry compassionately, reaching beyond tradition to improve the communities” it serves. All of its facilities are dedicated to the Sisters' mission of providing "Good Help to Those in Need".

A community celebration of St. Mary’s Hospital joining with BSHSI is planned for Friday, July 12, in Norton.
