Announces New CEO Appointed to Lead
Bon Secours St. Francis Health System
Marriottsville, MD – Following an in-depth
national search, Bon Secours Health System today announced the appointment
of Valinda Rutledge, a highly respected hospital leadership executive, as
its new chief executive officer for Bon Secours St. Francis Health System
in Greenville, SC. Rutledge will assume her new responsibilities at St.
Francis August 25, 2003. Rutledge
will come to St. Francis from St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City,
Okla., where she has served as president since 1997. St. Anthony Hospital,
a member of SSM Health Care System, is a 660-bed, tertiary, teaching
hospital that also operates a 200-bed community hospital. Her major
accomplishments there included spearheading construction of a $4 million
cancer center that significantly advanced oncology services to the
community; developing St. Anthony Heart Hospital to enhance cardiac care;
achieving a significant increase in hospital admissions and earning the
statewide Oklahoma Quality Award for its care delivery.

Health System senior vice president of sponsorship said that Rutledge
would bring special leadership skills to St. Francis at an important time
in its growth. “St. Francis is an important ministry of the Bon Secours
Health System and we’re pleased to have a leader and health care
professional of Valinda’s caliber here to help St. Francis’ mission
continue to flourish,” she says. Rutledge earned her master’s in nursing science from Wayne State
University, Detroit, Mich., and a master’s in business administration from
Butler University, Indianapolis, Ind. She has served in key leadership
positions at major tertiary, teaching hospitals that also operated smaller
and rural facilities. Her positions
have included vice president of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Saline
Community Hospitals (now members of Trinity Health System) in Ann Arbor,
Mich. and associate chief operating officer of Duke University Medical
Center in Durham, N.C. John T. Shea,
senior vice president for Bon Secours Health System stated, “ Valinda
possesses excellent healthcare leadership skills with a proven record of
success in directing complex, quality-oriented healthcare service
operations. We are extremely pleased to have someone of her ability and
background to provide visionary leadership for St. Francis and the
Greenville community.” “St. Francis

care, and that’s critically important to me,” says Rutledge, who will move
with her husband and two children to Greenville later this summer.

search committee included local board members, physicians, and members of
the St. Francis and Bon Secours Health System management teams. Marshall
Collins, chairman of the St. Francis board, says, “I’m absolutely
delighted that Valinda will join us to grow the St. Francis mission. She’s
imminently qualified and has a wealth of experience to lead us in our
growth and compassionate service to this community.”
