Secours names new CEO to lead Bon
Secours St. Mary’s Toni Ardabell to
oversee 391-bed Richmond hospital
campus
Richmond, Virginia January 26, 2009
– Bon Secours Richmond Health System
today announced the appointment of
Toni R. Ardabell as chief executive
officer for Bon Secours St. Mary’s
Hospital, effective March 23.
Ardabell comes to Bon Secours from
Inova Fairfax Hospital in Northern
Virginia, where she served in key
executive roles for the nationally
recognized health system since 1989.
“Toni is one of the most capable
leaders I have come across who
understands a mission-driven health
system,” said Peter J. Bernard,
senior vice president and CEO of Bon
Secours Virginia. “At a time when
Bon Secours Virginia’s goal is to be
the best health system in the
Mid-Atlantic region, it is important
to have leadership that lends itself
to relationship building and a
realization that the culture of Bon
Secours is what makes us successful.
Toni embodies those characteristics
and we look forward to her arrival.”
Ardabell’s career spans more than 33
years in key leadership positions,
hospital operations and nursing
management. Most recently, she
served as vice president for the
Inova Fairfax 2015 Capital
Improvement Program, where she led
project management for the largest
building project in the health
system’s history, including design,
construction and overall integration
of the $1.2 billion, 900,000
square-foot state-of-the-art
medical-care facility. Prior to
that, she served as the chief
operating officer for Inova Fairfax
Hospital. Prior management roles
also include chief operating officer
for Inova Fairfax Hospital for
Children and Inova Fairfax Hospital
Women’s Center.
“It’s important to have strong
leadership, and equally important to
have values that are compatible with
the mission of Bon Secours,” said
Sr. Anne Marie Mack, senior vice
president for sponsorship for Bon
Secours. “With Toni we have both an
excellent leader and a person of
compassion. She is a perfect fit for
what we are trying to accomplish for
St. Mary’s and our community.”
Ardabell’s appointment is a result
of a national search. She succeeds
Michael K. Kerner, who in July was
appointed CEO of Bon Secours Hampton
Roads, following the integration of
Bon Secours Richmond and Hampton
Roads to form Bon Secours Virginia.
Ardabell earned a Bachelor of
Science in Nursing from Pennsylvania
State University, in 1976; a Master
of Science in Nursing and
Cardiovascular Nursing, Management
Role from Catholic University of
America, Washington, D.C., in 1986;
and a Masters in Business
Administration from Marymount
University, Arlington, Virginia, in
1992.

served patients in Richmond since
1966 and is recognized nationally as
a leading healthcare institution. In
the past year, the hospital has been
honored by the Joint Commission for
cardiac services as being one of
only 10 programs in the United
States, and the only hospital in the
Mid-Atlantic region for
disease-specific cardiac services.

St. Mary’s Hospital received Magnet®
